I work for a water softener manufacturer. Don’t stress out about the salt—pellets are fine. Crystals (usually called “solar salt”) are also fine. The important thing is when you buy new salt, make sure it’s “water softener salt.” If the bag says anything about water softeners on it, then it’s fine. It’s just sodium chloride.

I highly suggest never using the bricks. Both the bricks and pellets won't get you perfectly soft water unless you turn the salt dosage up which you can't do on store bought softeners.

Jul 28, 2022 · Yes, pellets do this. When you buy salt there will be yellow bags and blue bags. Buy the blue bags, those are salt crystals. The pellets are packed down by machine and offer come loose again turning back into a powder. Disconnect float, pull brine tank outside and dump over in a place with no plants or anything and spray it out with water.
