I highly suggest never using the bricks. Both the bricks and pellets won't get you perfectly soft water unless you turn the salt dosage up which you can't do on store bought softeners.

The important thing is when you buy new salt, make sure it’s “water softener salt.” If the bag says anything about water softeners on it, then it’s fine. It’s just sodium chloride.
