Feb 21, 2012 · As for briquettes, some people love Stubb's, while others love Royal Oak, and others like Kingsford Competition. I buy the blue bag Kingsford when it goes on sale by the carload. I use charcoal primarily to generate heat. I use wood chunks to generate my smoke. Seriously, I've grilled up some killer food with Kroger charcoal, in a pinch.

If I didn't have water issues in my basement I'd keep more on hand. Found that out the hard way with a massive batch of sale charcoal that molded toward the end. Getting a more efficient smoker didn't help either.

Feb 28, 2010 · I’m a huge fan of Kirkland Briquettes. Kingsford lost me when their “regular size” bag dropped to 16.2lbs due to shrinkflation. I’ve tried other briquettes like B&B, Fogo and some others but Kirkland ones perform the best in terms of lighting relatively quickly and not imparting any odd flavor. $17 for 40lbs of charcoal is hard to beat.

Jul 6, 2010 · Lowe's stopped carrying the Stubb's all natural charcoal briquets...which I absolutely loved! Very low ash content, and hight heat and fairly long cook times. Not to mention a very clean burn. Added bonus was you could re-burn leftover coals. I've been searching for a replacement and heard that Cowboy Charcoal was the manufacturer of Stubb's.

Time, ambient temp, humidity,wind, altitude etc etc all play a role in fire management. Experiment and find what works best for you. That's more than half the fun.
