U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, appointed by former President Ronald Reagan, signed the temporary restraining order on Thursday to block Trump’s action. Coughenour’s decision just days after a number of states, including New Jersey, sued the Trump administration over the move.

The Justice Department has ordered federal prosecutors to investigate state or local officials who they believe are interfering with the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration, saying they could face criminal charges, in an apparent warning to the dozens of so-called sanctuary jurisdictions across America.

The directives to Justice Department employees could face fierce blowback from legal advocacy groups and officials in cities and states led by Democrats.

The DOJ instructed prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against officials obstructing federal immigration enforcement.
