The Atlanta Falcons have benched veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr., who will make his first-ever start on Sunday at home against the New York Giants.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are turning to rookie Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback and benching veteran Kirk Cousins as they fight for their first playoff berth since 2017.

The NFL announced concrete plans Tuesday to flex the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Commanders to play on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 8:20 p.m. versus being standard timed on the previous day.

The schedule might work in the Falcons' favor, however. Atlanta faces just one team with a winning record the rest of the way, which leaves the door wide open for Cousins & Co. in the NFC South.
