Fresh cross-border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia broke out on Sunday hours after US President Donald Trump announced the two Southeast Asian nations had agreed to ceasefire talks.

Thailand and Cambodia said they were open to talks on a cease-fire in their deadly border clashes after President Trump held calls with both countries’ leaders. Early Sunday local time, residents near contested areas on the two nations’ 500-mile border woke up to sounds of explosion for a fourth day.

President Trump said he had intervened to help stop the deadly strife, now in its third day, after it extended to provinces about 200 miles south of where clashes began.
