Lavish events based on books and shows are becoming more popular—but fans of “Bridgerton” say they were scammed out of hundreds of dollars at one Detroit event.

The Netflix-inspired event is drawing comparisons to such fiascos as the Glasgow Willy Wonka experience, Tumblr's DashCon, and Fyre Festival.

Footage from an event themed around Netflix hit Bridgerton—not affiliated with the show—has gone viral, along with complaints that the food was raw and a pole dancer was offered as entertainment. One person alleged: "I knew I got scammed.

Seven months after attendees described the Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Scotland as a scam, Bridgerton fans say they experienced the same at the show-inspired event that ended in disappointment.

The event also gave the guests the opportunity to meet Queen Charlotte, but the woman playing her reportedly tried pushing her business card on everyone.
