STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced on Wednesday a new policy for Police Department vehicle pursuits.

New York City’s police department is curbing its use of high-speed chases after finding that about one-quarter of more than 2,200 initiated by officers last year led to a collision, property damage, physical harm or death.

The commissioner announced that police cars will not long engage in speedy pursuits of suspects except in cases of violent felonies and misdemeanors.
