In July 4, 1777 the Sons of Liberty set fireworks off over Boston Common to celebrate one year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia also set off fireworks that evening, and from there it grew into the celebrations we know today.

With illegal firework activity always popping off this week, Boston Police has launched a fireworks reporting hotline for the holiday weekend. BPD has established a dedicated non-emergency phone line to report fireworks-related concerns throughout the weekend — from July 3 to 6.
