More than a hundred endangered tortoises have been returned to Tanzania from Thailand as evidence in a case against a wildlife smuggling network, the international criminal police organization Interpol said Friday.

A total of 116 baby tortoises that were smuggled by a Ukrainian national, Orga Kryshtopa in 2023, have been returned to Tanzania as evidence against their smuggler.

The rescued tortoises included several endangered or vulnerable species, such as pancake tortoises, radiated tortoises, and Aldabra giant tortoises, all of which are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

More than a hundred baby tortoises, mainly deceased, were returned from Thailand to Tanzania as evidence against a wildlife smuggling network. Discovered at Bangkok's airport, these tortoises highlight the global impact of wildlife trafficking.
