Almost exactly 24 hours after a winter storm brought snow, sleet and ice to much of the Big Bend and South Georgia, a large stretch of a major highway is set to be shut down. Interstate 10 from the Alabama and Florida State line in Pensacola to Exit 192 will close in both directions Wednesday at 7 p.

A major storm spread heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and the coastal Carolinas on Wednesday after breaking snow records in Texas and Louisiana, treating the region to unaccustomed perils and wintertime joy.

A major winter storm that slammed Texas and blanketed the northern Gulf Coast with record-breaking snow moved east Wednesday, spreading heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and eastern Carolinas.

Forecasters said it was too early to tell whether the ice and snow would approach or beat Tallahassee’s all-time snowfall record of 2.8 inches set in 1958.

The National Weather Service said on Jan. 3, 2018, parts of north Florida, along with south Georgia, saw snow accumulate thanks to the first winter storm the Sunshine State had seen since 1989. Georgia of course saw the largest accumulations, up to 2 inches, but the snowfall in Florida was still measurable.

On that day, snow fell in South Florida for the first time in recorded history. According to an article from the NWS, snow was seen across all of southeast Florida as far south as Homestead and even on Miami Beach.
