As a rare winter system continues to impact northern Florida and the Panhandle on Wednesday, bringing historic snowfall and frigid temperatures in some areas, power outages are affecting residents.

Duke Energy is reporting 9,000 power outages from Tallahassee to Port St. Joe. Tuesday’s historic winter storm is to blame, as utility crews work to get customers’ lights back on. Ana Gibbs is the spokesperson for Duke Energy. She told WFSU on Wednesday that crew members have traveled across Florida, working to get power restored.

Florida's capital city could be in line for a historic and thrilling snow day or a harrowing ice storm as a freak winter storm slides across the Gulf Coast.

If confirmed, Florida had its highest snowfall total since 1954. As many as 15,000 Duke Energy customers lost power at one point.

Additionally, Florida Power & Light websites show outages in the area, there are 1,150 outages in Bay County, 6 in Okaloosa County, and 1 in Walton.

An historic January storm dumped more deep snow along the U.S. Gulf Coast on Wednesday after bringing Houston and New Orleans to a near standstill over the past two days and burying parts of Florida's Panhandle with accumulations more typical of Chicago.

Florida residents who had a rare snow day were seen in photos and videos making snowmen and having snowball fights. Meteorologists say the snow may stick around until Wednesday, but won't reach Tampa.
