Sound waves can reflect off surfaces ... but you are still able to hear it. Keep the bell ringing and turn on the vacuum pump. Make sure the safety screen remains between you and the bell jar.

The further a sound wave travels the weaker it gets ... Believe it or not in this big jar there is an electric bell ringing but we can't hear it because we've taken out almostall of the air ...
