The Temporary Protected Status for evacuees who escaped Taliban rule expired May 20, 2025. The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) notice said those who have not obtained Refugee status or Asylum protections must go back to Afghanistan by July 14, 2025, or face deportation.
In the unsigned decision, the Supreme Court granted a stay on Chen’s order, meaning DHS can move forward in its efforts to end protected legal status for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua who came via parole processes under Biden.
