Nissan enthusiasts – if there are any left – it may be time to rejoice. A new application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office back in December shows the company may see a future for the Xterra stateside.

Trademarks for the Nissan Xtrerra name are being renewed, hinting at a possible return of the rugged SUV. Nissan filed trademark renewal applications for "Xterra" and "Nissan Xterra" in the U.S. Dec. 23, 2024. Both trademarks apply to "motor vehicles, namely automobiles, sport utility vehicles, and structural parts thereof."

Nissan's filing cites two previous approved trademarks for the Xterra name — most recently one filed in 2003. While that filing included the specific Xterra wordmark used on the back of SUVs, this one is a trademark for the name Xterra in "standard characters, without claim to any particular font style, size, or color."

The 4x4 market is rife with competition, but the return of the Xterra could be a boon for the struggling automaker.
