The Kuril Islands are a chain of 56 islands stretching from the southernmost tip of the far eastern Russian oblast of Kamchatka to Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan.

The Kuril Islands, referred to as the Southern Kurils by Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan, were captured by Soviet forces following Japan’s surrender to Allied Forces in 1945.

After the islands were occupied at the end of World War II, as many as 17,000 Japanese citizens were expelled. Around 19,000 settlers currently live on them, according to intelligence firm Stratfor.
