Landon Slaggert’s offensive game isn’t all that nuanced. To the Chicago Blackhawks forward, scoring goals is pretty much black-and-white. Or, better yet, blue. “Just getting to the blue paint,” he said hours before he was set to make his NHL season debut Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Chicago Blackhawks allowed the Tampa Bay Lightning to tie it with the goalie pulled and then win it in overtime last week at United Center. This time around, they wanted to make things right against the Lightning.

Last Friday, the Blackhawks failed to protect a one-goal third-period lead, getting outshot, 17-1. They played this third period on their toes, however, and added a key insurance tally at 8:02. A Seth Jones shot from the point went wide, but the puck came off the end boards to the other side of the net. Ryan Donato finished into an open cage.
