Marvel's Fantastic Four is heading for a box office opening north of $100 million as the MCU provides an antidote to universe fatigue.
While Fox had respectable success with the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four movies (which starred Chris Evans as Johnny Storm pre-Captain America), the former studio saw a Josh Trank-directed 2015 reboot completely tank after a full reshoot, grossing only $167M worldwide. This time, it’s different — it’s Feige’s Fantastic Four.
First Steps brings Franklin Richards into the MCU, a character who has shaped Marvel's past and may shape the future of the cinematic universe.
The Matt Shakman directorial, which hit screens on Friday, also stars Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach
Technically, you don’t need to watch any of the MCU before Fantastic Four: First Steps. The movie takes place on a parallel Earth, so the story doesn’t depend on previous knowledge of MCU events to make sense. First Steps serves as a soft reboot, kicking off Marvel’s Phase 6.
Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby shine in this retro-futuristic take that blends family drama with cosmic stakes as Galactus threatens Earth.
More than any other element, to be the true, definitive movie take on the Fantastic Four, the MCU reboot needs to embrace the stunning, eclectic visuals of Jack Kirby, the team's visionary co-creator.
