The castle overlooks the river upper reaches of the river Teign flowing in the valley below. The nearest walk to the castle is the Hunters Walk which is high at the top of the valley, the other is the Fisherman's walk which is at the bottom of the valley and runs alongside the river, down from the area of Chagford, through sandy Park towards Teignmouth and the sea. I believe that a lot of forestry walk has been undertaken in the valley recently. A nice place down river is Fingle Bridge complete with a Cafe.
What time does the car park open? Since booking isn't required for the Teign Gorge walks I'd like to get there before the 11 am bookable opening time.
